WHAT IS STRIVE?
Strive for College is a new approach to correcting the inequalities of college access. Strive recruits undergraduate student mentors from local universities to guide low-income high school students through the process of applying to, enrolling in and paying for four-year colleges and universities. We are a national organization with chapters across the country.

Why are you in Strive?

I joined Strive because I was extremely fortunate in my college application process to have two excellent college counselors, provided by my high school. I actually enjoyed applying to college. I knew that while I am nowhere near as qualified as those counselors, I could mirror their enthusiasm and support to provide the
same environment for another student.

What is your favorite thing about Strive?

My favorite thing about Strive is creating a relationship with a person I would have otherwise never met.

Secretary Name: Christine Zhao

Grad Year: 2012

Major: Information Systems

Future Aspirations: IT Consultant or Project Manager. I am also thinking about the Masters Information Systems program at CMU.

Position on Board and major responsibilities/projects: As Secretary, I keep track of attendance and meeting minutes. I also inform the other mentors of what's going on with the Exec Board. This semester, we will be organizing Strive Day and a Friday Night SAT Quiz Bowl at our University Center. At the event, we plan on playing the video of our interviews with the students at the end of last semester, so people will get to know more about Strive.

Why you are in Strive: I enjoy how mentoring students is an ongoing weekly activity. Every week, you get to talk to a student one on one and get to know them better and watch them grow and mature. I have the experience of going through the college application process, so I can actually give relevant advice and guidance. At the end, you can share the joy with your mentee when they get into the school of their choice!

What your favorite thing about Strive is: I like when all the mentees and mentors bond and have fun together when we have group activities. We played Jeopardy and all sorts of name games. Everyone gets pretty involved and it's a good way to get to know the other mentees.
